- Leave liquidation
Did you know that you can convert your annual leave days into cash. Yep, according to the Ethiopian constitution you actually can do this. Hence, if you’re annual leave days are nearing expiration or you’re changing your employment without using your leave days, be sure to ask that those be converted into financial payment.
If you have been employed for over 10 years in a private organization and your contract is terminated you are entitled to lifetime retirement pension. Provided that you are of retirement age of course. This is a recent revision to the Private Organization Employees Pension Proclamation no. 715/2011. And a boost towards eliminating elderly vulnerability.
- Working Over-time
Do you work over-time without compensation? If your answer is yes then make sure to pursue legal action because it is illegal for an employer to force an employee to work over-time without prior agreement. If your employer is in breach of agreement then he is liable to a sum of 500 birr. On the other side of the coin however, an employee could get fined 1,200 birr for not abiding by the contractual agreement and/or terminating his/her contract unlawfully.
- Provident Fund
In accordance to the Ethiopian labor law, you have the right to ask for a provident fund payment. Workers contribute a portion of their salaries into a provident fund and employers must contribute on behalf of their employees. The money in the fund is then paid out to retirees. In some cases, this can go to an employee upon termination of employment. Provided that he /she made all the necessary payment.
