In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors. For its Strengthening Drought Resilience (SDR) program activities in Somali, Jijiga Region, GIZ is looking, for;

Responsibilities · Working under the supervision of the National Natural Resource Management (NRM) Expert and in close cooperation with the soil and water management (SWC) engineer, he/she will be charged for the implementation of integrated soil and water rehabilitation measures in collaboration with government services, partners, service providers and local communities; · Compile data by making field measurements and produce maps; · In charge of surveying, studying and designing context-specific soil and water conservation measures like water spreading weirs in close cooperation with the SWC engineer; ·Control and supervise field works; · Contribute to gender-sensitive planning implementation. Tasks General Tasks · Contribute to operational and annual planning, subject specific monitoring and reporting in line with project objectives and intended results; · Participate regularly in regional team meetings for planning and reviewing; · Support cooperation of SDR-projects, Somali BoFED, Somali Agricultural Bureau, Somali Livestock and Pastoral Development Bureau and other stakeholders from administration and development partners at all levels; · Carry out responsibilities in line with the GIZ management principles; · Maintenance of equipment; · Keep himself/herself informed and updated with regard to all knowledge and technology in the field of expertise, responsibilities and activities; · Fulfil any other necessary tasks if required.
Specific tasks related to surveying, study and design of soil and water conservation structures and water spreading weirs · Establish fixed points for use in making designs and maps, using geodetic and engineering instruments; · Measure and stake out the size and shape of an area of land using specialized surveying tools and techniques; · Work with engineers and developers to plan, supervise and monitor construction projects; · Record the results of surveys and verify the accuracy of survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites; ·Contribute to the design of water spreading weirs using the survey result data; ·Compile and evaluate data gathered from field studies; · Produce area and profile maps and reports; · Support the setting-up of training material and exchange visits; · Train woreda experts and direct their work in such activities as performing surveys or drafting maps; · Control working teams in the field; · Report on work progress; · Monitor and report functioning of soil and water conversation structures and propose maintenance and repair measures.
