Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training
Position: Virolologist
Tasks:
· Leading virology research
· Demonstrates innovative design, development and execution of research projects through literature review and scientific teamwork.
· Contributes to the execution of design, optimization, verification, troubleshooting and validation of current and new assays and provides input into the design, direction, implementation and interpretation of experimental studies
· Conduct research into the structure, function, ecology, biotechnology and genetics of viruses
· Conduct molecular studies and experiments into genetic expression, gene manipulation and recombinant DNA technology Analyze nucleic acids, proteins and other substances produced by viruses
· Conduct experiments to isolate and make cultures of specific viruses under controlled conditions
Qualification: MSc in Microbiology/Virology/Biochemistry/Cell Biology/Molecular Buology and 5 years of experience or PhD in Microbiology/Virology/Biochemistry/Cell Biology/Molecular Biology and 2 years of experience

Specialized Skills
• Virology techniques for isolation, tittering, amplification and purification of viruses are required
• Construction, selection and banking of stable cell lines
• Skills in molecular biology techniques like sequencing analysis, and viral vector engineering are required
• State of the art molecular biology techniques, gene cloning, DNA and RNA purification, PCR and qPCR
• Protein characterization techniques like ELISA, western blots, FACS, confocal microscopy, cell-base assays are required
• Skills in cell-based assays and viral vector construction
• In vitro and in vivo work with different viruses is desired
