John Snow, Inc/Strengthening Ethiopia’s Urban Health Program is looking for Qualitative Research Assistants for the Implementation Research Initiative for Accelerating Scale-up of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC). In partnership with Harvard T. H. CHAN School of Public Health and Addis Ababa University Schools of Medicine and Public Health, the KMC research initiative will study the implementation of KMC by gaining an understanding of barriers and potential facilitators, and using data in repeated rapid cycles of model development-implementation-evaluation-refinement until a promising model is found to achieve high coverage of quality KMC. We will work within the existing government health system and the Oromia Regional Health Bureau to implement the models with the goal of providing KMC to 80% or more of the target population of newborns, aiming to reduce mortality associated with preterm birth.
The Qualitative Research Assistants, under the guidance of the Program Learning Coordinator, will be responsible for collection, transcription and preliminary analysis of high quality qualitative data. As part of the qualitative data collection the Research Assistant will visit women, communities and health workers at health facility and community level to conduct focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, key informant interviews and review of documents and records. In the process the Research Assistants will apply standards and guidance that will be provided by the research team. The Qualitative Research Assistants will be based in Ziway, Adami Tulu Woreda and Robe, Arsi Robe woreda with frequent travel to sites in Adama and Asella.
