Background and objective
Project of GIZ and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) in Support of the Education and Research Program of the African Union in the area of Peace and Security
IPSS is a premier institute for peace and security studies in Africa, supported by GIZ. Its mission is to promote peace and security in Ethiopia and Africa at large through commissioned research, focused capacity development, and by providing regular platforms for dialogue between and among political decision makers vis-à-vis academic circles and the interested public. The Institute further contributes to practical conflict management by providing substantially advanced training to different cadres of peace and security practitioners in response to the growing needs of key pan-African institutions such as the African Union, Regional Economic Communities/Regional Mechanisms (RECs/RMs) and their member states. The Programme is a joint collaboration between the IPSS and the African Union (AU) and GIZ. It was established with the aim to contribute towards enhancing the capacity of the Peace and Security Department (PSD) of the AU and other stakeholders.
GIZ and IPSS are looking for a project coordinator for its research project “Assessing the Impact of the African Peace and Security Architecture”, which is being implemented in collaboration with the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM). The focus will be on the roles of the African Union and regional actors in dealing with conflicts and crises in a number of African countries. Particular attention will be given to means of diplomacy, mediation, peace support operations and post-conflict reconstruction and development. The project coordinator will also be responsible for co-drafting the annual impact report and take over other tasks within the research and policy dialogue and education units and support communication efforts and knowledge management and exchange. Tasks and responsibilities
· Coordinate the APSA Impact Assessment team in delivering on research results and preparing draft and final deliverables.
· Provide targeted research support when requested towards the finalization of project deliverables.
· Contribute to the drafting of the Annual APSA impact report
· Support the project in developing the APSA Impact Assessment methodology and annual reports.
· Assist county profiling and other research activities.
· Take over tasks in the area of education and training on request.
· Promote communication, outreach activities and knowledge management and exchange.
Required qualifications, experiences and skills
· A Master degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, e.g. development economics, international relations, conflict studies and/or social sciences.
· Studies, exposure and/or work abroad within an international environment. Proven Experiences and ability to conduct policy research and proven exposure to academic research environment.
· Experiences and knowledge in international development cooperation, governance and/or and peace and security in Africa.
· Excellent command of English speaking and in text production is required. Good working knowledge of French is desirable.
· Able to organize work processes well and to work according to set time frames.
· Ability to deliver on assignments in an autonomous manner; pro-active in seeking guidance if and when require.
