AHRI in collaboration with APOPO, a Belgian NGO that trains rats to detect landmines, tuberculosis and much more is launching a project that aims to enhance tuberculosis case detection among health facilities across Addis Ababa City Administration using trained rats. The objective of the project is to find smear positive tuberculosis patients that are missed by the conventional method (microscopy) and bring them to treatment so as to contain the spread of the disease to the community. AHRI would like to hire qualified candidate in the position of Rat Handler for this project.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Caring for and using the TB detecting rats to find TB cases missed by microscopy
- monitoring the rats’ performance and progress through ongoing data collection and reporting
- communicating regularly with the team supervisor and working collaboratively with fellow rat handlers as well as other project staff
- up keeping the TB laboratory and eat evaluation facilities
- Responding to any assignment given by the immediate supervisors and the project leader.
At least high school graduate OR diploma in animal sciences or biological sciences from a recognized college/university with excellent English proficiency.
Experience:
- ability to handle animals humanely and safely
- ability to follow protocols and good attention to details
- Previous work in laboratory animal use or medical laboratory environment
Other Competencies:
Fluent English proficiency is vital as the work involves direct communication with foreign teams. Please do not apply if you don’t possess Excellent English proficiency.
