SNV is a not-for-profit international development organisation. Founded in the Netherlands 50 years ago, we have built a long-term, local presence in 39 of the poorest countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Our global team of local and international project staff work with local partners to equip communities, businesses and organisations with the tools, knowledge and connections they need to increase their incomes and gain access to basic services – empowering them to break the cycle of poverty and guide their own development. SNV’s focus is on three sectors most relevant to these issues: Agriculture; Renewable Energy; and Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH).
SNV has been active in WASH since 1978. The global WASH program provides technical and capacity building support to partners from the public, private and NGO sector with the objective of increasing sustainable and equitable access to water, sanitation and hygiene in rural areas and small towns.
SNV’s “Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All” program aims at increasing coverage of improved sanitation in rural areas, including schools. The program builds upon and integrates elements of demand creation and sanitation hardware products and services development. In most SNV country programs, the creation of basic sanitation demand, either through community-led total sanitation (CLTS) or other methods, is successfully being implemented. However, follow-up requires identification of the next steps in the sanitation ladder in terms of both demand for, and supply of, improved sanitation hardware products and services, in order for improved latrines to be installed.
SNV has been engaged by DFID to reach 2.73 million people in sanitation and hygiene by December 2015, of which at least 2.084 million will be through access to sanitation. Between January 2016 and March 2018, specific focus will be placed on system strengthening and capacity building through documentation, learning and enhancing communication. The programme will be undertaken in nine countries including Ethiopia.
The programme will be implemented using the SNV Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All (SSH4A) approach which combines work on demand creation −mostly through Community Led Total Sanitation and Hygiene (CLTSH, sanitation supply chains, hygiene behavioural change communication (BCC) and WASH governance.
SNV is one of the development partners in the country supporting the GoE in scaling up rural sanitation and hygiene approaches since it has built up extensive experiences in different aspects of water, sanitation and hygiene, and considers documentation, learning, profiling the work of SNV and enhancing communication services as a very important pillar and timely. In particular, SNV plans to produce at least two high quality WASH cases, and stories supported with the best photograph and video clips from the field per project every year. This is the top priority of SNV Ethiopia more specifically WASH sector for 2017 and beyond.
