Farm Africa, founded in 1985, is a specialist international non-governmental organization working in remote and resource-poor rural areas in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Farm Africa believes in a prosperous rural Africa and it aims to reduce poverty by helping poor farmers and herders improve their livelihoods in a sustainable way by developing tailor-made approaches appropriate to their circumstances. Farm Africa works in partnership with communities, governments, local organisations, international NGOs and private sectors to develop strong rural livelihoods and then share and scale the results of this work with others to achieve maximum impact.
Effective agriculture has the power to change lives. It underpins prosperity, food security and stability the world over. Farm Africa focuses on transforming agriculture and managing natural resources sustainably. We champion a holistic approach that boosts yields, protects the environment and connects smallholder farmers to thriving markets.
We are looking for a Regional Programme Support Manager who has outstanding project management expertise, the ability to make the complex simple, who loves to succeed through identifying and developing other people; and who has a real passion for sustainable rural development in Africa.
We have an ambitious strategy to expand our work over the next five years. We’ll increase our impact. Lift more communities out of poverty. Work with more corporate partners who share our vision. Open up more agricultural markets. Provide more expertise.
The Regional Programme Support Manager is a new role which will lead our work on starting new projects quickly and well, and will help us identify more talented employees and consultants to move Farm Africa forward.
Farming doesn’t just provide food, but income and prosperity. Good agriculture can change lives. Farm Africa focuses on transforming agriculture. We help farmers to increase their harvests, protect the environment and sell their produce in thriving markets. To achieve this during the past year we have defined our approach to agriculture, natural resource management and the environment, which is enabling us to strengthen and grow our existing technical expertise and deepen our already unique methods of community engagement.
During 2016 we updated our strategy with the aim to become the leading European NGO specialising in agriculture, the environment and market engagement in Africa. The organisational budget is around £13m and we employ around 180 people (the vast majority in eastern Africa) and we have ambitious growth plans.
These growth plans require that we excel at starting new projects rapidly and well. The majority of our projects are delivered by discrete project teams assembled during inception phase according to the specific technical demands of each project.
The Regional Programme Support Manager is a new role to enable us to do this. The role will be East Africa based and part of the Programme Design and Support (PDS) team. They will provide direct support to country programmes in the set-up of new projects and lead the development and roll-out of a well-defined and standardised project start-up process across Farm Africa.
We recognise that the most important part of project start-up is people. The efficient identification and deployment of experienced and technically excellent people, who share our vision and values, is vital for us to maintain the high standards we set ourselves. Therefore the role will help us extend our capacity to identify, engage and employ highly talented individuals by building up a roster of suitable candidates for future project management and technical roles (salaried and shortterm consultancies) in our four country programmes, especially those from the East Africa Region.
