The Fred Hollows Foundation, an international NGO founded in 1992 has been a driving force in the development and implementation of blindness prevention programs in some of the poorest and most isolated regions in the world. Currently operating in 25 countries throughout Africa, South Asia and South East Asia, The Foundation is working to end avoidable blindness. Our Ethiopia program and the ‘Stronger SAFE’ program is focused on trachoma elimination.
Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Stronger SAFE Ophthalmic Nurses, the project team field workers will collect and document household observational data and assist with entomological experimentation and fly identification in line with the Stronger SAFE Field Work Standard Operating Procedures.

Core accountabilities |
Field Work Implementation · Explain to potential participants the purpose of the visit and what should they expect from participating in the study and take informed consent after making sure that the trial participant understood what informed consent is and after reading the information sheet for the participant. · Travel to trial participants’ houses and observe and document in detail hygiene practices, sleeping arrangements and human behaviour that could be relevant to transmission of trachoma. · Conduct interviews with householders in a sensitive and respectful way. · Participate in fly observation work and related fly biology field work (including fly trapping work and fly repellent experiments). · Participate in fly and sample collection. · Assist with sample and fly transport to the laboratory. · Participate in fly rearing where required. · Organize and keep the collected data securely. · Liaise sensitively and respectfully with members of the communities in which the field work is being conducted. · Assist the research project team in any activity as required by the project Standard Operating Procedures outlines by the Project Manager or Deputy Project Manager. |
