Background
American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, AJJDC, is a 102 year old, non-profit, non – governmental organization based in New York, USA. AJJDC started its work in Ethiopia in 1984. AJJDC main mission is providing humanitarian assistance to people in need around the world through programs of emergency relief, health care & community development.
Currently in Ethiopia, AJJDC under its Medical program provides medical care and surgical treatment for patients with spinal deformities, congenital and rheumatic heart disease, and certain cancers and rare diseases. The project targets to help anyone having the aforementioned health problem, but basically concentrating on youths, poor, and marginalized patients who are likely to have a good outcome after treatment and surgery.
Spinal deformity is very common in Ethiopia, due to scoliosis, trauma, tuberculosis, polio, and genetic conditions such as neurofibromatosis. At present, there is no treatment available in Ethiopia and it is nearly impossible for a poor Ethiopian to be self-referred abroad for treatment and surgery for spine deformity despite the wide range of its impacts that include health, psychological, social problem to leading to the extent of suicide. However there is no any organization (GO or NGO) in Ethiopia addressing spinal deformity and hence AJJDC is the only organization in the country working in spine surgery in different schemes like referring patient to abroad and by coordinating and arranging spine surgery mission in Ethiopia in collaboration with renowned spine surgeon teams from Ghana and USA.
From our observation and clinical and demographic data, we are able to realize that majority of the spine patients coming to our spine program are living outside Addis Ababa and also from families with poor socio-economic status who cannot fund and support the spine patients while following up in the spine clinic, undergo various diagnostic tests, undergo Pre-Operative preparations and during Post-Operative times during which they need appropriate rehabilitation services in rehabilitation center for early and better recovery with quick functional restoration of overall health. Majority of the patients we serve are children and adolescents under 18 years old. The rehabilitation Program serves approximately 125 patients each year but not more than 20 at a time with different length of stay.
Objective
