The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research Institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of infectious diseases and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.
AHRI would like to hire qualified candidate in the position of Associate Researcher I for One-Health Unit.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Assist the unit in coordinating various One-Health field studies
· Responsible for taking samples in various domestic animal species in the field (e.g. milk, blood), including camels
· Assisting in field data collection such as questionnaire surveys, dairy herd books, interviews
· Perform basic laboratory work required in the field such as serum collection, quick tests, biopsy, fecal sampling etc.
· Assisting in data entry and basic statistical analysis
· Attend meetings and trainings provided at the institute
· Maintain positive working relationship with the research team and the laboratory personnel
· Perform other duties as assigned by the Unit leader
Required Qualifications: DVM degree (veterinarian), MSc holder with a minimum 2 years of practical field work experience and Two (2) publication points.
Requested Skills:
- Experience in field work, also under difficult conditions (e.g. pastoral areas of Afar)
- Willingness to travel often outside Addis Ababa
- Be familiar with different livestock species, included camels
- Be familiar with different husbandry systems (e.g. intensive dairy, rural and preferably also pastoral)
- Good people communication skills, be able to communicate with farmers and pastoralists
- Ability to work in a team
- Reliable, patient, trustworthy
- Good spoken and written English
