GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY of Junior Accountant
Working in the Mekelle Business Development Center under the direction of the Senior Business Development Officer and working closely with the Grant Accountant and other finance staff in Addis Ababa. The JGFO will ensure the accuracy and completeness of Mekelle BD center accounting records and will have primary responsibility for managing the monthly accounting cycle.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Maintain the bank files, ensuring that all bank information is properly filed and updated
2. Record daily cash transactions in Excel and send to the country office for posting.
3. Maintain custody of the office cash, make payments of approved transactions, (Cashier).
4. Perform periodic cash counts per the Finance Manual.
5. Provide Financial Review of payment requests and expense reports (travel expense reports and operational expense reports) for accuracy and completeness (per policies and procedures), ensuring expense reports are fully approved before payment.
6. Archive copies of (finance) documents
7. Other month close tasks as assigned, including submission of required month end supporting documentation,
8. Monitor advances/ advance ageing report. (Responsible person of advances)
9. Make sure that all supporting documentation is prepared and filed according to DOT procedures.
10. Maintain the lease and rental agreements file.
11. Assist in responding to audit inquiries.
12. Conduct him/herself both professionally and personally
13. Performing field payments / cash distribution - outside the office when requested.
14. Other duties as assigned.
ACCOUNTABILITY
REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: SBDO and Grant Accountant
WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: Finance team. Procurement, Administration and Logistics Team, Program team.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
· Three years or more of accounting or bookkeeping experience, including experience with double-entry accounting in a donor funded project environment
· Strong knowledge about banking system.
· A degree in accounting or a relevant business field
· Computer skills in MS Office programs, particularly Excel
· Familiarity with computerized, double-entry accounting software
· Strong organizational skills as well as attention to detail
· Good oral and written English skills,
