The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is driven by the vision of a world without malnutrition. GAIN is a Swiss- headquartered foundation that mobilizes public-private partnerships and provides financial and technical support to deliver nutritious foods to those people most at risk of malnutrition. GAIN is delivering improved nutrition to an estimated 700 million people in more than 30 countries, half of whom are women and children. GAIN’s Food Value Chains –FVC- works to make nutritious diets affordable and accessible for vulnerable populations. By looking at the food system holistically, and using sound market-based approaches, GAIN’s engages actors from the farm to the consumer to increase public knowledge and advocate and propel more private-sector investment to: improve the nutritional density of foods; reduce an agricultural commodity’s loss of nutrients as it moves up the value chain; and provide more affordable, nutritious food products in urban and rural markets. We use a proven alliance-building approach that draws actors together and turns problems into opportunities for improving nutrition and reforming food systems through better and innovative investments in agriculture. Currently GAIN has created the Post harvest Loss Alliance for Nutrition (PLAN) to bring together the multitude of public and private actors addressing this issue to collectively reduce loss and waste of nutritious food
Description
Overall Purpose
As a leader in identifying and delivering solutions to address malnutrition, GAIN seeks to strengthen the value chain for nutritious foods thus making nutritious diets more affordable and accessible for vulnerable populations. To this end, we take a market-based approach, promoting investment in local private enterprises along the value chain. With our new strategy, we hope to reach a formative, sustainable and scalable solution to food insecurity and malnutrition
GAIN has developed the Post harvest Loss Alliance for Nutrition (PLAN) to bring together the multitude of public and private sector actors addressing this issue to collectively reduce loss and waste of nutritious foods. PLAN acts as both a global nucleus for coordination, programming, research, knowledge exchange and investment on Post harvest food loss as well as a national hub in emerging markets for business to business (B2B) engagement. Through national and global alliances of stakeholders engaged in post harvest loss and waste reduction, GAIN aims to serve as a backbone organization driving for collective impact. At the center of the alliance is a B2B engine where local businesses will be matched with international industry leaders and technical experts to increase local enterprises’ access to knowledge, technologies and financial services. GAIN is now entering into Ethiopia for a 2 year project called Ethiopian Post harvest Loss Alliance for Nutrition (E-PLAN) to design and scale PLAN activities around key nutritious commodities that will reduce losses and increase the availability/accessibility to nutritious foods for vulnerable populations (pregnant women) in selected areas
The E-PLAN Senior Project Manager will work closely with the GAIN PLAN Global Team and the Ethiopia Country Director to set up and implement the E-PLAN program and help strategically build a portfolio of activities. The position is responsible for operational delivery of a core business area or operation and has a significant management responsibility and operational impact. This is expected to be a two year project until 2020 and will be given fixed term contracts
