The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) was launched at the UN in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. GAIN is a global, Swiss-based foundation that mobilizes public-private partnerships and provides financial and technical support to deliver nutritious foods to those people most at risk of malnutrition. Our programs in Africa and Asia enable better diets via nutritional products, such as fortified staples foods, including cooking oil and flour, and condiments like salt and soy sauce. We also support improved maternal and infant health by promoting breastfeeding and specialized products for infants over six months and young children. In addition, we partner with local businesses to improve the quality of food along agricultural value chains. By building alliances that deliver impact at scale, we believe malnutrition can be eliminated within our lifetimes.
GAIN fights malnutrition in Ethiopia through innovative and sustainable models that increase access to affordable nutritious foods among communities vulnerable to malnutrition.
Post-harvest loss and waste (PHL/W) is one main contributor to the reduced access to nutritious fruits and vegetables in many developing countries. PHL/W stems from inefficiencies along the supply and value chain that include inadequate production planning, insufficient post-harvest management, inadequate access to appropriate cooling, inadequate processing and packaging technologies, poor infrastructure, and lack of affordable financial services. These inefficiencies unfavorably impact availability and pricing of key commodities and represent the loss of trillions of nutrients from the food system.
GAIN has created the Postharvest Loss Alliance for Nutrition (PLAN) to bring together the multitude of public and private actors addressing this issue to collectively reduce loss and waste of nutritious food. PLAN acts as both a global nucleus for coordination, programming, research, knowledge exchange and investment on postharvest food loss as well as a national hub in emerging markets for busines s to business (B2B) engagement. PLAN is currently scaling up in other countries and is now in the design stage in Ethiopia to create and build the PLAN Ethiopian Alliance.
Objective of the Consultancy
The objective of the consultancy is to analyze and deduce how GAIN can best tackle food losses in selected nutritious value chains that show high PHLW and can address key malnutrition burden; like micronutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables or protein from animal sourced foods, through PLAN activities. The results of the consultant's assignment will be reviewed by GAIN and will serve as a basis for further development of the “Landscape Mapping and Analysis of Specific Commodities”.
Scope of Work
The consultant's assignment is to advise on:
Identifying the GOE’s nutrition & postharvest agenda to see where they can intersect, identify the supporting Ministries and specific Ministry officials who may be champions and partners
Which specific nutritious agriculture value chains have potentially the most to gain from business solutions which will decrease food loss? A first set of selection criteria will be provided by the consortium before the start of the consultant's assignment. After this initial scoping of nutritious value chains, the consultant will meet with the GAIN team to assess the information and choose 2-3 specific value chains to continue investigating.
Mapping of stakeholders, network and knowledge for each of the selected value chains in Ethiopia.
