The Position: The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) seeks to recruit a Seed Source Officer who will be handling the planning, establishment, management, assessment and documentation of tree seed orchards and vegetative material mother blocks.
General: The World Agroforestry Centre (also known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry-ICRAF) is an independent research institution which generates science-based knowledge about the complex role trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods. As part of the Centre’s work to bring tree-based solutions to bear on poverty and environmental problems, researchers – working in close collaboration with partners – are developing new technologies, tools and policy recommendations for increased food security and ecosystem health. Key Responsibilities:
The Seed Source Officer is responsible for tree improvement (including seed source development and field gene conservation) within the project;
Responsible for liaison with the tree improvement and gene conservation programmes of Ethiopian Environment & Forestry Research Institute (EEFRI) and others;
Responsible for the implementation of seed source development programme as outlined in the Project Implementation Plan and the annual work plans;
In collaboration with the Seed Procurement Officer responsible for co-ordination and monitoring of seed demand, establishment of seed sources, and seed collection planning and implementation;
The Seed Source Officer is answering to the ICRAF Country Representative (ICR) and the Senior Team Leader (STL).
Other Responsibilities:
The duties of the Seed Source Officer will work under the supervision of the Project Management Team (PMT), including the following duties:
Based on the species specific priorities of integrated seed procurement/tree improvement/gene conservation, plan, prepare and implement the activities accordingly;
Prepare and implement annual work plans in the subject matter;
Prepare and follow up subject matter budgets;
In collaboration with the Seed Procurement Officer plan, supervise and assist in national seed source exploration for priority species;
Plan and establish seed stands cum ex situ stands and/or seed orchards (BSOs) of selected priority species;
Monitor project support to the subject matter and liaise with the programme of EEFRI and the Project Seed Centres (PSCs) in planning, co-ordination, and supervision of the establishment of species, provenance and/or progeny orchards/mother blocks/trials/conservation stands for selected priority species on different sites and in different seed zones;
Plan and assist in implementation of applied research and data recording;
Guide PSC staff in seed source development and management methods.
In collaboration with the Seed Procurement Officer compile, maintain and update national seed source register;
Carry out networking with other professionals, organizations, institutions, projects, etc. in Ethiopia and the region;
Record all relevant data, process and publish, whenever relevant, in Ethiopian and international journals and other media.

Education:
At least BSc degree or MSc degree in Forestry or related field with postgraduate specialization in tree improvement, and with a broad understanding of seed procurement.t
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years work experience for BSc degree or 3 years post-graduate working experience for MSc degree including experience in research in tree improvement. Post- graduate studies in either of the two subjects and/or experience from similar positions elsewhere will be considered an additional advantage.
Skills:
Familiarity with development and relevant research techniques in the subject matter
Ability to plan work and multi-task
Computer literacy i.e. knowledge in MS Office
Ability to analyze data and prepare progress records and reports
Manages staff in their day to day activities
Updates relevant manuals/protocols
Flexible on work hours including travel and extended field work

Minimum Base: Birr 30,863.00 (Negotiable depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)
Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
