Project Title:
Improved self-sufficiency of host communities and Somali refugees in Aw-bare and Sheder refugee camps
Introduction
LWF Ethiopia is a foreign charity registered and licensed by the Charities and Societies Agency in Ethiopia according to the Charities and Societies proclamation No. 621/2009.
In the last 44 years, LWF Ethiopia was responding to emergency crises affecting both Ethiopians and refugees from other countries. LWF has extensive work experience in emergency and post emergency refugee assistance programs in Assosa, Dollo Ado, Gambella and Jijiga refugee camps. In 2017, LWF is present in Bambasi, Gure Shembola, Jewii, Aw-bare and Sheder refugee camps working in areas of Community Based Psychosocial Support, livelihoods and environmental protection and WASH which are the major areas of specialization for the organization. LWF Ethiopia is also implementing sustainable livelihoods interventions in areas frequently affected by consistent problem of food insecurity.
Background
Since early 1990’s, the people of Somalia have been fleeing persecution, civil war and forced military conscription and seeking asylum and protection in Ethiopia. The refugees have been welcomed in Ethiopia and hosted in the different refugee camps established in the country. Between 1997 and 2005, following a large-scale repatriation of refugees to Somali land, seven of the eight Somali refugee camps in Ethiopia were closed except Kebribeyah refugee camp.
In July 2007, the former camp of Aw-bare (Teferi Ber) was reopened to accommodate Somali refugees fleeing the fighting between the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and Islamic Courts Union (ICU) forces. In May 2008, Sheder refugee camp was opened. As of November 30, 2017 a total of 11,956 and 10,829 refugees are hosted in Aw-bare and Sheder refugee camps respectively.
LWF World Service Ethiopia has been operational in these refugee camps since 2007, providing water supply service and livelihoods support for the refugees and host community. Currently, LWF is implementing a livelihoods project, funded by Bureau of Populations Refugees and Migrations (BPRM). The project aims to improve the food security and livelihoods status of 1,100 households from the refugee and host communities, by supporting them to engage in agriculture production and different income generating activities. One of these activities is small scale modern poultry farming.
The project plans to establish 6 small scale poultry farms, 3 in Aw-bare and 3 in Sheder which will be managed and run by 360 beneficiaries. To this effect, LWF World Service Ethiopia would like to hire a consulting firm which will conduct a detailed study and advice on the establishment of the farms.
