Program Background:
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster.
IRC has been working in Ethiopia since 1999 and is implementing integrated, community-managed programs aimed at improving the quality of lives and recover of livelihood of disaster-affected population’s through promoting individual participation, strengthening institutions and emergency response. Currently IRC is operating in the Benishangule, Tigray, SNNPR, Oromia, Gambella and Somali regions on Emergency Response, refugees’ assistance and livelihood projects.

Scope:
Under the direct supervision of the ERR Officer the Sanitation and Hygiene promotion Assistance is responsible for implementing the routine ERR Activities, distributing NFI for IDPs, promoting the HH latrine construction, facilitate and conduct sensitization hygiene promotion awareness campaign. He/she will also work with EH and Health team intimately for the achievement of quality program implementations.
Major/Key Responsibilities:
· In collaboration with other team members, the Sanitation and Hygiene Assistance undertakes the daily WASH related activities in the assigned Districts.
· Carried out Water trucking activities including dewatering pumps, fuel and operation costs in IDPs site
· Mobilize the community to involve Emergency WASH facility construction in consultation with the ERR Officer & Senior Environmental Health Officer
· Distribution of point of use water treatment chemicals and water storage and collection containers (jerry can/ buckets) in the two IDPs site
· Carried out the Provision and distribution of WASH NFI (e.g. water bucket, soaps and Jericans) for hygiene promotion.
· Conduct Community mobilization in building latrines and provision of hand tools for construction of Temporary emergency latrine
· Facilitate and Conduct together with other EH team members and Health Team, Training and building the capacity community health workers, water management committed and water distribution monitors.
· Prepare the daily, weekly and monthly activity plan and submit to the ERR officer.
· Properly distribute IEC Materials to be used at community level.
· Convey hygiene and sanitation messages for the community in the assigned IDPs site.
· Together with the ERR Officer, and other project team, Organize community level hygiene awareness campaigns and prevention of AWD.
· Conduct training for community representatives on Hygiene and sanitation and AWD control.
· Plan and ensure the proper distribution of Non Food Items;
· Works closely with Woreda Disaster Offices and Kebele level stake holders towards efficient and effective implementation of the response;
· Works in collaboration with IRC Adama Field Office, EH and HP, Water Technicians and Ensure proper integration of the interventions with other sectors;
· Prepare brief emergency related monthly updates and submit to the supervisor;
· Takes additional works as assigned by supervisor.
· Maintain strong working relationship with respective IRC staff and other partners. Coordinate and communicate with IRC staff on the ground, the water team and HP team ,
· In collaboration with immediate supervisors and other IRC staff, manage the proper utilization of the allocated project resource for the HP and EH activities under the project.
· Prepare a monthly progress report and weekly update and submit to the ERR officer per the reporting time scheduled
· Organize and ensure the documentation of every project activity, and capacity building activities both in hard and soft copies supported by pictures.
Qualification and Experience
· BSc Degree/Diploma in Public Health, Environmental Health or any other related field.
· 1 year experience for BSc Degree holders and 3 years’ experience for Diploma holders.
· NGO experience is plus.
· Hygiene promotion experience in local community settings.
Skills:
· Ability to work as part of a team as well as to work autonomously when required.
· Good communications and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to speak and write local language (Afaan Oromo) is a plus.
· Basic computer skill.
