Project Description
The USAID funded READ II is a five year project lead by Creative Associates with a subcontract to EDC to improve the reading proficiency of 15 million children by 2022, with a focus on six target regions. The project will focus on three main areas of intervention to achieve its goal to improve students’ reading fluency and comprehension: 1) improving classroom reading and writing instruction, 2) strengthening community engagement in education activities and 3) improving leadership, management and delivery capacity at each administrative level. This position falls under goal 3.
Position Description
The Pre-Service Teacher Training team through the Senior Reading Specialist will work with the Ministry of Education and the Colleges of Teacher Education (CTEs) to support capacity to develop or revise curriculum and materials for pre-service teacher training in early grade reading and writing in Mother Tongue (MT) and English and support faculty in improving skills to effectively teach reading.
The Pre-Service Teacher Training Specialist will work primarily to collaboratively strengthen systems at the CTE level to support early grade reading and writing. With other Pre-Service Teacher Training team members, the Pre-Service Teacher Training Specialist will advise on and help coordinate system strengthening, materials review and coaching through action research workshops and roll-out pre service curricular support materials for both teachers and students. Materials could include teachers’ guides, textbooks, workbooks, audio and video lessons, brief lessons delivered by SMS, or other formats. This position will liaise with the Ministry of Education counterparts, as appropriate, as well as with relevant project regional staff. This position will be based at the main office in Addis Ababa.

Reporting and Organizational Relationships:
This position is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and reports to the Senior Reading Specialist as well as EDC’s senior staff member. This position will maintain close communication relationships with other technical teams as well as operational and financial staff as relevant. This position will liaise with the Ministry of Education counterparts, as appropriate.
