Catholic Relief Services Terms of Reference
for Translation of Livelihoods Training Modules
Background
Catholic Relief Services(CRS) carries out the commitment of the Bishops of the United States to assist the poor and vulnerable overseas. Our Catholic identity is at the heart of our mission and operations. We welcome, as a part of our staff and as partners, people of all faiths and secular traditions who share our values and our commitment to serving those in need. CRS Ethiopia has been awarded the USAID-funded Development Food Security Activity (DFSA) and Feed the Future Livelihood for Resilience – Oromia (LRO) Activity.
LRO and DFSA are reviewing their in-country and global livelihoods curriculums for duration, content and context. As part of the review, the projects are developing/revising facilitator guide, participator guides, and training materials (e.g. handouts, flipbooks, etc.). In developing/revising some of these tools, CRS will be pre-testing them with trainers and communities in Afan Oromo. Afterwards, they will need to be translated into Afan Oromo and readied for dissemination.
Objective of the TOR
The translator/translation company will be responsible for translating facilitator’s guides, participant’s manuals and training materials from English into Afaan Oromo. The ranges of translation includes youth work readiness, women’s leadership, nutrition, and business skills/plan development (see below for specifics). The major responsibilities may include quality and timely delivery of materials, produce timely feedback, and run all activities upon agreed schedules with respective products. Many of the facilitator’s guides will be intended for community-based facilitator with an eighth-grade education. Participant manuals and handouts will be for community members with varying levels of education.
The translator is expected to work from the CRS/Ethiopia 50% of the consultancy to ensure regular and ongoing consultation with technical staff. After receiving documents (e.g. reference copy, glossary of specialized terms and acronym list etc.) by CRS, the consultant should sit with technical staff and clarify any terminologies or programmatic approaches that they are not familiar with. Then the consultant will submit initial 1 – 3 pages for CRS to determine if the quality of the translation is sufficient. For long texts, the consultant may be requested to submit pre-determined parts for review for review and feedback.
