GIZ – Biodiversity and Forestry
As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.
In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on the commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors. GIZ Ethiopia is looking to recruit an economist skilled in value chain analysis and follow up (focus on coffee) for the Biodiversity and Forest programme and its co-financing activities as specified below.
Position: Internship
Application deadline: March 21, 2018
Place of Work: Addis Ababa
Duration of the contract: 3 month with possibility of extension
Responsibilities:
· Jointly undertaking of wildlife species and habitat monitoring studies
· Onsite coaching of park staff on species and habitat monitoring tools and methods (e.g. Desktop GIS/Mobile GIS, GPS, Camera Traps, etc).
· Preparing illustrative guidebooks on common species of wildlife in the target national parks
· Preparing park management base maps
Preparations
· To get acquainted with the programme/project documents
· To learn about conservation issues in Ethiopia with a focus on Borena Sayint and Chebera Churchura National Parks
· To study the current protected areas management best practices, species and habitat monitoring tools and methods
· To collect literature and open source conservation tools
Tasks in Detail
Monitoring and mapping works
· To make a collection of available maps and data
· To collect data or verify on the ground with GPS about major park management features and attractions
Illustrative booklets
· Collect the knowledge base and contents for booklets
· Collect or take new pictures about species of interest
· Prepare the contents and write up of the booklet with illustrative pictures and maps
Capacity building
· Prepare short training manuals on pre-agreed and specified areas
· Provide onsite trainings and coaching of park staff on wildlife and habitat monitoring tools and methods
Additional tasks:
· To recommend the measures on how to best manage and develop the park infrastructures
· Where possible support on preparation of conservation education materials
Conclusions
· To have a small database at site level
· To make a Master based on this work in the park (s) and make it available to the programme in English
To work with the Programme according to needs and interests
· To work occasionally with the programme
· To learn the programme work at least in one of the other topics, the programme addresses
Qualification and experience:
· Minimum BSc and preferably Masters in Conservation Biology, Global Change Ecology, Protected Areas Management, Conservation Technologies (e.g. GIS, Camera Traps…), Biodiversity and Habitat Monitoring, and related fields.
· very good English and must be interested to work as a pair with a international trainee with a willingness to share skills and experiences to staff of target national parks.
· In order to qualify for an internship, you must be currently enrolled at a college or university, attending a course of further study of which the completion of an internship could be an integral component of the course.
