Title: Senior Mentorship Technical Advisor Grade: F
Department: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia March 2018
Overview of the Project:
There is a significant need for access to safe surgery and anesthesia worldwide: 5 billion people do not have access to safe surgical care, including 90% of people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Surgical conditions are a major contributor to mortality and morbidity in low- and middle-income countries: 1.5 million deaths, or 6% -7% of all preventable deaths in LMICs could be averted each year through access to a package of essential surgical procedures. Currently, only 6% of surgeries take place in the poorest countries, where over one third of the world’s population lives.
The GE Foundation’s Safe Surgery 2020 initiative aims to transform access, quality, and safety of surgical care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), leading to reductions in maternal and trauma-related mortality and morbidity and building stronger health systems. The Initiative will seek to achieve this vision through investments in three core pillars: Transforming surgical leadership, Innovation, and Elevating Ideas. Through the first pillar, the Initiative will work on-the-ground by transforming the leadership capacity of the surgical teams at all levels in LMICs, to improve the quality of surgical care in target facilities. Through the second pillar, the Initiative will identify, test and scale innovations, accelerating progress in safe surgery both at the facility-level and more broadly. Through the third pillar, the Initiative will develop an evidence base, identifying proven programs to improve surgical care, and elevating the profile of surgery on a global stage.
Safe Surgery 2020 has been initiated in Ethiopia in early 2016, under the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Health in Ethiopia, which has recently developed a national Safe surgery strategy SaLTS (Saving Lives Through Safe Surgery) to prioritize increasing access to safe, affordable surgical and anesthesia care.
Jhpiego as a key member of the Safe Surgery 2020 team and in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and Regional Health Bureaus has been leading the leadership transformation of the safe surgery 2020 initiative where surgical teams undergo a leadership development intervention which is followed by intense mentorship program in collaboration with SaLTS related professional societies.
Following early success in the implementing regions, Jhpiego intends to strengthen and institutionalize the mentorship program by assigning a dedicated technical advisor that will coordinate the national safe surgery mentorship activity of the Safe Surgery 2020 initiative.
Jhpiego therefore seeks a self-driven senior health professional with a background in surgery and mentorship to work on a 12-month period (with the possibility to extend) to support the implementation of the Safe Surgery 2020 and the Ministry of Health’s national Saving Lives Through Safe Surgery (SaLTS) mentorship program.
