GIZ- Biodiversity and Forestry
Background
As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.
In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on the commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors.
The original forest cover in Ethiopia, is estimated as a percentage of the total land area, at 25% compared with 48% for the world (Earth Trends, 2007). Ethiopia’s forest resources have been playing significant socioeconomic and environmental roles (MEFCC, 2017). In 2013, Ethiopia consumed roughly 124 million cubic meters of wood and is consuming more each year (MEFCC, 2017). At the national level, in Amhara region, modern tree planting using introduced tree species (mainly Eucalyptus) for alleviating shortage of firewood, construction wood and industries created an income opportunity for the rural poor (Mekonnen et al., 2016). The productivity of plantations depends on site quality, seed sources, and management (Yitebitu et al., 2010). The management of the smallholder woodlots is often poor limiting their productivity (Wubalem et al., 2015).
The Biodiversity and Forestry Programme (BFP) aims to put institutions charged with the management of protected areas able to implement strategies, instruments and measures for the protection and sustainable management of biological diversity on a broad scale. To achieve this, the programme pursues a multilevel approach.
There are five chapters in the programme of Biodiversity and Forestry:
· Strengthening the national park strategy
· Process moderation with the aim of generating equitable benefit sharing between the local population and the park management
· Integration of biosphere reserves and Forest Priority Areas into the national protected area system
· Contribution to build up a forest sector
· Improving the coordination and knowledge management for the management of biodiversity
· This present training aims to a better understanding of farm systems for woodlots production and management in Awi zone (Amhara region).
