Catalytic Sustainable Agribusiness Investments (CSAI) is a USAID-funded initiative that aims to promote climate-smart agricultural development in East Africa that aligns with Feed the Future (FtF) objectives of inclusive and sustainable agricultural-led economic growth and strengthened resilience among people and systems. With three specific objectives of: a) Creating an enabling environment for investment in climate smart agriculture; b) Incubating innovative, climate smart and inclusive agriculture businesses that lend themselves to private investment; and c) Accelerating deployment of private capital into scalable climate smart agriculture businesses, the CSAI Activity utilizes a strategy that relies on engagement with and assistance to the private sector.
Brief Background of the CSAI Program
Catalytic Sustainable Agribusiness Investment Project’s (CSAI) overall objective is to identify and promote sustainable and inclusive innovations through incubation and scaled-up private and public investment into these agribusiness models. The project is aligned with the objectives of the U.S. Government's global hunger and food security initiative Feed the Future (FtF) and thus aims to increase productivity, incomes to smallholder farmers, gender equality, and climate resilience and food security, while reducing poverty and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The project pursues a two-pronged strategy:
1. Incubating innovative, early stage sustainable, and inclusive agriculture businesses;
2. Accelerating the deployment of private capital into proven and scalable sustainable business models.
With these objectives, the project employs a strategy that relies on targeted support to promising business models and active engagement with key public and private stakeholders in the agribusiness investment landscape in East African countries, aligning with key FtF program objectives.
The project will incubate and develop sustainable and inclusive innovations and investments, supporting these activities through analysis, training, technical assistance, public private dialogue, and strategic partnerships. In doing so, the project aims to identify and scale business models that are climate smart, promote the involvement of women and youth, and increase smallholder incomes.
