Background
With the growing impetus to end malnutrition, an emphasis on the first 1,000 days of life — a window of opportunity for health and development – has also become central for Ethiopia. The process often starts in the womb and continues through at least the first two years of life. The the impact of malnutrition during the critical 1,000 days between a woman’s pregnancy and a child’s 2nd birthday can last a lifetime. Malnutrition early in life can cause irreversible damage to a child’s brain development, immune system and physical growth. This results in a diminished capacity to learn, poorer performance in school, greater susceptibility to infection and disease and a lifetime of lost learning potential.
In addition to this, adolescent girl’s age is a second window of opportunity in the life cycle approach.
There are a number of compelling reasons for the international community to focus on adolescent nutrition, these include adolescents, as a population group, are increasing in numbers, adolescent nutrition is a reflection of early childhood nutrition or malnutrition, adolescence is a time of increased nutritional requirements and adolescents are, in many contexts, a marginalized and dis empowered group.
The overarching goal of the project is to create four model Woredas which implement evidence based, high impact and cost effective package of nutrition interventions through the continuum of care – from adolescence to pregnancy (motherhood), during delivery and through to infancy and upto 24 months old.
