The focus of our work in the country is on vocational education, sustainable use of natural resources, land management and food security, biodiversity and forestry. Further programmes enhance the development of a sustainable textile sector and renewable energies.
The GIZ-Biodiversity and Forestry Programme in Ethiopia is looking to recruit a junior conservation expert as specified below.
Position: Junior Conservation Expert
Place of Work: Addis Ababa (with frequent travel to the program sites)
Remuneration: as per the GIZ scale

A. Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent of this post has the main responsibility for the:
§ Compilation and aggregation on past and present conservation challenges and endeavours with emphasis to BFP conservation sites
§ Elaboration of all kind of Maps for the programme (forestry, conservation), and store them in the server
§ Establishment of wildlife and ecological monitoring platforms and standards
§ Support to the conservation component senior field advisor and his staff
B. The Tasks
1. Compilation and aggregation on past and present conservation challenges and endeavours with emphasis to BFP conservation sites
§ To map and document threats to wildlife conservation (invasive species, fire, settlement, livestock, settlement/urbanization, etc)
§ To review and document threat mitigation strategies and approaches from elsewhere (fire monitoring, invasive species management, etc)
§ To support the integration of best practices in this regard to the ongoing General Management Plan Development of Hallaydeghe-Asebot and Borena Sayint National Parks
2. Elaboration of all kind of maps for the programme (forestry, conservation), and store them in the server
· To get acquainted with all kind of maps done at BFP
· To elaborate maps for the programme in forestry and conservation for all kind of results:
· To establish links with GIS labs, Univerities with GIS skills and to make terms of reference for bigger work in GIS
3. Establishment of wildlife and ecological monitoring platforms and standards
§ To provide technical services in GIS, remote sensing, GPS, digital mapping and data management, manipulation, and interpretation, which will include responding to requests for information, advice and hands on support to meet the needs and demands of our field team and partners
§ To build the capacity of partner staff on monitoring tools (GIS, Remote sensing, Database management system and Bioinformatics)
§ To install monitoring software and to mentor site staff on how to use them,
§ To communicate monitoring results with maps and info graphs and sharing them to GIZ-BFP and the responsible conservation sectoral authorities;
4. Support to the conservation component senior field advisor and his staff
§ To support field staff in facilitating working advance, local subsidies, settlements, documentations
§ To ensure the involvement of the field staff in all kind of conservation component discussions
§ To make the link to the monitoring and to guarantee at all time, that monitoring information from the field is verifiable;
C. Other responsibilities
§ To support the administration of the program and ensure that the rules and regulations of GIZ are always respected
§ To take an active part in all the meetings, workshops etc. the program
§ To be actively involved in transversal tasks (gender, HIV AIDS, etc.)
Qualifications required
§ Degree (preferably masters) in wildlife management, natural resources management, biodiversity conservation and conservation biology with practical experience in GIS and remote sensing;
§ Minimum of 1-3 years professional experience in the sector of conservation, protected areas management, and conservation data management and interpretation
§ Thorough experience in application of GIS, remote sensing and data management tools and methods in conservation;
§ Very good understanding wildlife and species monitoring methods
§ English language skill and at least two Ethiopian languages, proven communication skills
