Preparation of Key Messages for TV and radio spot transmissions-VAS
At Nutrition International (NI) the former Micronutrient Initiative (MI), we believe nutrition is the difference between what could be and what never gets the chance. So, every day, we drive for better, faster ways to deliver the nutrition interventions we know work to those who need them most.
Background:
The 2016 Ethiopian demographic and health survey (EDHS) states that under-five mortality in Ethiopia is 67 per 1,000 live births. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a significant public health problem in Ethiopia leading to 80,000 deaths in a year and affects 61 % of preschool children.
In Ethiopia, Vitamin A Supplementation was started in 2004 through Enhanced Outreach Service (EOS) delivery approach a bi-annual distribution of Vitamin A supplementation, deworming and nutritional screening for children under five years of age, in 54 woredas and later expanded to more than 800 woredas all over the country. In 2012, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with NI and other partners had started the transition of EOS to Community Health Day (CHD) and then to routine Health Extension program (HEP). Currently, 460 woredas are implementing HEP.
Despite the newness of the intervention and the gaps on the implementation and recording the HEP program has created easy access for the supplementation and better platform for health education and counseling sessions between care givers and health workers. For this reason the FMOH has decided to transit the VAS program from EOS and CHD to HEP completely, and the transition will happen phase by phase. Currently the whole woredas of Amhara , Tigray Addis Ababa, Diredawa, and Harari as well as half of the woredas of Oromiya and SNNPR regions are implementing the routine HEP. In addition the FMOH has a plan to transition the rest of the woredas found in Oromiya and SNNPR region from CHD to RHEP in the current fiscal year.
In the past two years of implementing routine VAS programs, it is been identified that the transition was not clear for the caregivers since they were confused where and when to go to get the VAS for their children. As a response FMOH together with Nutrition international and other partners have developed a key message which are aimed to inform the care givers on the benefit of VAS, and where and when to take their children to get Vitamin A supplementation.
Therefore NI seeking to hire a local consultant who will work on preparation of key messages to be ready for TV and radio spot transmissions.
