Girl Effect (GE) is a global organisation that uses creative digital and media products to empower adolescent girls. GE operates in more than 65 countries and in Africa, with strong presence in Rwanda, Malawi and Ethiopia through cultural brands as well as in Nigeria and South Africa with digital products. In Ethiopia, Girl Effect launched Yegna in 2013 as a unique brand for positive social change with music and media content rooted in Ethiopian culture and co-created with girls.
About Yegna
Yegna is a multi-media platform which encourages positive behavior change for girls in Ethiopia by tackling real-life challenges through entertaining stories and music. Yegna is Ethiopia’s most successful youth brand, which today reaches 8.5 million people, or 50% of the population in Addis and the Amhara region. The brand is carefully designed to be rooted in Ethiopian culture and reflects the realities of the youth in Ethiopia today. Yegna is provoking conversations about the positive role girls can play in Ethiopian society and is challenging the way people think about girls - and the way girls think of themselves.
