Background:
The project “Capacity building for Scaling up of evidence based Practices in agricultural production in Ethiopia” (CASCAPE) is a joint effort of the governments of Ethiopia and The Netherlands to improve agricultural productivity in Ethiopia. CASCAPE, funded by the Royal Netherland Embassy and currently in its second phase (2016-1019), is part of the Bilateral Ethiopian Netherlands Effort for Food, Income and Trade (BENEFIT) partnership.
CASCAPE and its partner universities, work closely with the Agricultural Growth Programme II (AGP2), the Ministry of Agriculture’s extension directorate, the Regional Agriculture Research Institutes and the Ethiopian Institute for Agricultural Research. CASCAPE contributes to the goals of AGP2 through conducting studies and field demonstration of best fit agricultural practices. After validation, these best fit practices are ready for scaling by the AGP stakeholders. Five university clusters serve as hosts of the project in four main regions: Tigray (Mekele University), Amhara (Bahir Dar University), South (Hawassa University) and Oromiya (Addis Ababa University for Oromia central and Jimma University for Oromia west).
Additional funding made it possible to expand the goals of CASCAPE with a specific gender and nutrition component: CANAG (CASCAPE Nutrition and Gender). The specific component will have achieved the following targets by the end of 2019:
Increased diversity of food intake by mothers and young children (by year 3: 50.000 beneficiaries, using the diet diversity score as the main indicator).
Availability of and demand for affordable quality seed of varieties of nutritious crops has increased.
Five hundred DAs and HEWs trained on nutrition behavioural change communication strategies.
Indirect beneficiaries: The general public has access to information via radio, video, field days, exposure via markets and schools: (by year 3: 150.000 persons receive information, using a field survey as the main indicator).
An appropriate approach to work on intra-household dynamics is validated, resulting in an increase in influence that women have on decisions related to food production and consumption
