Position Overview
GIZ is currently implementing the Strengthening the Capacity of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) towards Enhanced Drought Resilience in the Horn of Africa Program– SCIDA II TC Facility for Ethiopia (TC-Facility), which works in collaboration with government and nongovernmental actors to identify and implement measures to improve the drought resilience of Agro-pastoralists in the Afar and Somali Regions of Ethiopia. As a partner in the GiZ TC-Facility, CNFA will pilot activities in the areas of forage production, oil production and processing, green charcoal production and veterinary drug trade with the funding support from GiZ. The aim of these pilot activities is to stimulate the capacity of the private sector to potentially fill unmet demand and improve livelihoods, food security, and increase resilience of agro-pastoralists in Afar.
The CNF-GiZ Afar Project Business Development & Marketing Expert will be responsible for all business development and marketing activities of the project. The position holder will lead the feasibility and business plan development for oil production with private sector investors in Somali Region. S/He will be responsible for identifying alternatives for regulated charcoal production in Afar Region and develop a business model and business plan for the same. The roles also involves serving as technical adviser to GiZ-CNFA, and government, NOGs and private sector stakeholders on business and market development aspects of “Building the Capacity of Private Sector in Afar and Somali” project. .
Specific Responsibilities of the Business Development and Marketing Expert
Feasibility Study & Business Plan Development for IMUAL Oil Processing Factory
During the market analysis, CNFA identified IMUAL which is a sesame oil processing company set up in
2014 in Jigjiga and currently instituted as cooperatives with 15 individual members. The company has high economic potential, but lacks business management knowledge and has faced challenges with its supply chain. CNFA aims to undertake an in-depth analysis of these gaps and chart an improved and commercially feasible business model and a corresponding business plan. Moreover, CNFA-GiZ will pilot the planting of sun flower seeds with 10-15 farmers in Afambo district in Afar Region. Simultaneously to production of sunflower, CNFA and GIZ will identify potential private sector oil processors who would be interested in investing in sourcing sunflower seeds from these farmers in Afar. Promotion of Private Sector in Sustainable Charcoal Supply Chain Production
In the Assyta Woreda, Organization for Sustainable Development (OSD), a local NGO, has been able to receive 100 ha of prosopis land from the Afar government to use for sustainable charcoal production. With the support of donors, OSD organized a group of 30 youth into a cooperative to burn charcoal from prosopis in metal kilns. CNFA along with GIZ will improve the OSD business model to make it fit for government approval, and the model will allow for a private sector investor from the region to invest in the charcoal production with youth cooperative members remaining as shareholders.
