Program Overview:
The five-year READ II project, funded by USAID, will boost the quality of literacy instruction and student support, reaching out to children at risk of failure and dropout caused by cognitive, emotional and physical effects of hunger, violence, and displacement. READ II seeks to better equip teachers with effective early grade reading instruction techniques and materials in seven mother-tongue languages and English, while simultaneously building a culture of reading in the school, home and community.
Scope of work for the Consultancy Service: Artist/illustrator
Basic Consultancy Information
Consultancy Dates: Work to be undertaken for a period of 45 days, beginning as soon as possible.
Location: Addis Ababa
Supervised by: Senior Reading Specialist
Overall and Specific Objectives of the Rapid Assessment
The person in this position will be responsible for creating digital illustrations for two high quality educational print-ready materials for the Read II program. The artist/illustrator will create approximately 40 illustrations for two educational materials. Written descriptions, sketches and discussions with the authors will help the artist understand the content, purpose and message of the illustrations. The Artist will work with the authors to ensure that the illustrations are culturally relevant and reflect inclusivity and depict the Ethiopian context. Piloting of the illustrations will be done by sending e-files of the illustrations to the Senior Reading Specialist who will send them to Regional READ II teams to get feedback. The illustrations will be edited based on findings from the field and input from the READ II Addis Reading Team. The first document is the Teacher Mentoring Manual and will require approximately 30 illustrations. The second document is the Guide to Enhanced Professional Development for Mother Tongue Teachers. Approximately 25 illustrations will be needed. The illustrations should be developed using electronic media and software.
