STUDY TO ESTIMATE LIVESTOCK CARRYING CAPACITY IN THE BALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK AND ITS SOUTHERN WATERSHEDS, BALE ZONE, OROMIA REGIONAL STATE
Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) are implementing a project entitled: “Bale Mountains Eco-Region Project: Strengthening livelihoods and ecosystem services in the southern watersheds of the Bale Mountains” funded by the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ)
FZS is seeking to hire a consultant to carry out a study to determine the timing and spatial extent of grazing in areas used by communities in woredas inside and outside the southern part Bale Mountains National Park (BMNP) and to estimate the stocking rates and carrying capacity of these grazed areas.
This study will provide underpinning knowledge on the carrying capacity and grazing pressure of a significant area of the Bale Mountains National Park to support the development the Grazing Pressure Reduction Strategy (GPRS) which is one of the main objectives of the BMNP General Management Plan. As such, the study will provide evidence on:
1. How the grazing pressure varies seasonally and spatially and between habitat types
2. The amount of grazing land available on rangelands in the system and its productivity
3. The source communities and households who graze animals in the park.
4. The socio-economic status of the households grazing animals in the park
6. The extent to which grazing pressure is greater than the ability of the vegetation to support the livestock and maintain ecosystem health taking into account wild herbivores and including an assessment of the extent of trampling and bare ground.
Tenders will be expected to demonstrate the following:
