FHI 360-Ethiopia Background: FHI 360 has been in Ethiopia since 1990 and has been supporting the Federal Ministry of Education (FMOE) of Ethiopia in capacity building and material provision in the areas of HIV prevention, education quality, and life skills over the past several decades through several projects, including the Ethiopia In-School Youth HIV prevention program (ISY-E) and Improving the Quality of Primary Education Program (IQPEP) projects to strengthen the education bureaus in all levels. FHI 360-Ethiopia has also delivered technical assistance to numerous ministries.
Assessment Study Specifics: Currently FHI360 organizing a research study titled “Validation of a disability screening toolkit for children ages 6-12 in school settings” using organizational funds from the FHI 360 Research and Evaluation Strategic Initiative. The study will take place among children 6-12 years old in 2-3 primary schools in Addis Ababa and possibly Amhara. The primary objective of the study is to validate a set of instruments (a ‘toolkit’) for identifying CWD’s through direct interviews and screening that, if validated, could then be used in other school contexts. This will increase the knowledge around children with disabilities (CWD’s) by enabling identification procedures that can be used in school settings and, ultimately, help CWD’s to get support they need. The instrument will also help educators, health care providers and donors, generate quality, reliable data on disability prevalence and on the access to education and other social services for CWD’s.
Specific deliverables include:
1. Participate in a data collection and human subjects research ethics training, scheduled for 3-28 December 2018. Location to be decided. This may involve pre-testing the tools as guided by FHI 360.
4. Using mobile tablets, conduct interviews and disability screening tests with children and interviews with school staff. Interviews are expected to take approximately 1 hour.
5. During the first week of data collection, review output regularly with Study Manager for completion and accuracy.
6. Report daily identification numbers of completed interviews and any concerns or issues and how they were/were not resolved.
7. Report challenges faced to the Survey Manager immediately and maintain notes from experiences during field work to share as input for field report.
8. Distribute tokens of appreciation to participants.
9. Be responsible for mobile tablets and other equipment provided for field work. Return to equipment to FHI 360.
10. Be available to discuss field work after field work has completed.
Required Skills and Experience:
· Availability for the full study period.
· Tertiary social science qualification.
· Experience in research methods (interviews, focus group discussions, etc.).
· Proficiency with tablet-based data collection.
· Experience working with children. Experience working with persons with disability a plus.
· Excellent writing and communication skills in Amharic (native level) and English (fluent). Proficiency in other local language a plus.
· Excellent coordination and problem-solving skills including ability to effectively coordinate study participants.
· Excellent inter-personal skills particularly with people of different backgrounds

Remuneration and logistical arrangement: All travel related costs will be covered by the project.
