The Ethiopian Red Cross Society seeks a proven, inventive, and resourceful leader with a deep understanding of the humanitarian and social development issues as well as experiences in working with public, corporate and private donors with a real passion for inspiring large-scale impact by influencing others. In partnership with government, sister societies, donors, and volunteers, the Secretary General, will lead the strategy, design and execution of the strategic priorities and national programs of the National Society.
Established in1935, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) is a humanitarian organization providing services to communities affected by natural and human made disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. It also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities it serves.
ERCS is guided by the Principles of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the Seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. The ERCS National Board, empowered by the General Assembly, governs the ERCS. The National Board relies on the Secretary General for the conduct of the daily management of activities and programs of the Society. The ERCS National Board, therefore, is looking for a visionary, dynamic and innovative Secretary General, who is responsible for the implementation of ERCS’s vision, strategy and goals as well as who will lead the organizational transformation process of the Society. In close cooperation with the Board of Directors, S/he manages the Head Office in Addis Ababa and oversees the Regional /Branch Offices across the country with full operational responsibility in the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies that effectively address emerging issues, risks and opportunities related to humanitarian emergency with the aim of alleviating human suffering.
Under the general direction and supervision of the National Board and in accordance with the Charter, the internal regulatory framework as well as the overall legal framework of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the Secretary General of the Society oversees service, program, support as well as branch and resource development functions of the National Secretariat as well as the branches through their respective heads and Deputy Secretary Generals; represents the Society in bilateral and multilateral dealings, conducts negotiations, concludes agreements, enforces decisions of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the National General Assembly and the National Board of the Society; presents work plans and performance reports of the Society to the National Board.
II. Job Specification (Minimum Qualification)
The successful candidate will hold at least a M.A/ MSc in a relevant field and bring professional experience that combines intellectual and managerial leadership in the field of organizational development, humanitarian responses, capacity building, preferably combining non-for profit, public, private and/or academic sectors.
Second degree in Management/ Business Administration / Public Administration/ Public Health/ Social Work/ Sociology/ Social Anthropology/Governance and Development Studies/ Rural & Local Development Studies and 12 years related work experience, out of which 5 years in higher managerial position(s) in Humanitarian or Business Organization.
