TechnoServe (TNS) is a non-profit international development organization founded in 1968. Our mission is to help entrepreneurial men and women break the cycle of poverty by building businesses that create jobs, income, and economic opportunities for their families, their communities, and their countries. Through our Honey Contract Farming Project, TechnoServe is helping to address the challenges of Ethiopia’s fragmented honey supply chain through a holistic approach that focuses on increasing incomes for men and women smallholder beekeepers in Oromia, Tigray and SNNPR regions.
TechnoServe Ethiopia invites qualified Consultants to develop and submit a proposal for training TechnoServe’s project staff on smallholder beekeeping, which will support the training of smallholder farmer beekeepers in Oromia, Tigray and SNNPR regions. The Consultant may be based at his/her home location and travel to meet with and provide training to TechnoServe’s team. This initial consultancy will be for a period of up to 15 days LOE:
Assignment:
1 Prepare and deliver technical training for TechnoServe staff (LOE: up to 6 days): Using training materials and resources that the Consultant already has on hand, the Consultant will intensively train TechnoServe staff (around 8-10 staff total) on improved smallholder beekeeping practices at TechnoServe’s Jimma office in Jimma, Ethiopia. Tentative dates for training are February 18th-22nd.
This training will emphasize practical application and include the following topics:
i. Apiary site selection and preparation
ii. Hive establishment and colony management (including traditional, transitional, and modern hives)
iii. Queen rearing
iv. Honeybee forage
v. Disease, pest, and predator control
vi. Honey harvesting, bee product handling, and basic processing for smallholder beekeepers
While preparing for and conducting the training, the Consultant will consider gender roles and highlight opportunities for increasing women’s participation in smallholder honey production.
2 Following the training, provide follow-up coaching to trained TechnoServe staff, giving guidance and troubleshooting support on technical beekeeping issues, on an as-needed/ad hoc basis. The purpose of this support is to reinforce the staff’s ability to deliver effective trainings to smallholder beekeepers. (LOE: up to 9 days).
Deliverables:
1 Training plans and training modules/lesson plans, draft and final versions based on feedback
2 Report on the training, including recommendations for continued strengthening of staff knowledge and capabilities
3 Detailed record (in Excel) of LOE devoted to carrying out this consultancy, capturing hours worked on each assignment and specifically each request (date, name of requestor, topic) and response given during the coaching and support period.
Evaluation Criteria and Process
TechnoServe will evaluate applications based on the criteria and corresponding weights, indicated below. As needed, shortlisted candidates may be requested to sit for an interview as part of the competition for the award.
