Organizational Setting
Meki-Batu fruit and vegetables growers’ cooperative union (MBCU) is looking to urgently hire a very well experienced project coordinator for its Global Good Agricultural Practices (GGAP) Certification project. The project has been running since 2016 and, so far, more than 130 smallholder farmers are growing GGAP certified onions, tomatoes and green beans. MBCU is looking to build on this success by significantly scaling up the number of GGAP certified farmers. The Project coordinator will be leading the scaling up effort in close collaboration with partner organizations. A key organization jointly leading the GGAP project with MBCU in the GGAP project are IDH-the Sustainable Trade Initiative (a Dutch NGO) and the Ethiopian Horticulture Producers and Exporters Association (EHPEA).
Responsibilities
The project coordinator will be responsible for the overall supervision of the GGAP project implementation on a day to day basis. The responsibilities of the project coordinator will include the following:
1. Rigorously follow up of project implementation with the MBCU GGAP team as well as the supporting partners, IDH and EHPEA.
2. Based on the existing GGAP project documents, develop weekly and quarterly project action plans for MBCU GGAP team, follow up implementation and set the way forward as needed.
3. Make weekly visits to the GGAP participating farms in Dugda and Adami-Tulu Jido-Kombolcha woredas as well as the pack houses to check required GGAP compliance.
4. Submit a bi- weekly report to the deputy director of MBCU and the IDH ISLA project team.
5. Submit progress and end-year financial and narrative reports and Progress on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in accordance with IDH’s reporting guidelines.
6. Work closely with the MBCU finance head to ensure project spending is in line with specified budget and documents for audit are appropriate.
7. Document and disseminate, upon approval by all partners, key lessons (opportunities, challenges etc.) and good practices from the GGAP pilot project and submit to the IDH ISLA team along with bi annual reports
Employment Type: Contractual (The initial appointment is for a period of one year. However, the duration of the contract or its extension of appointment is subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds).
Required Competencies
Education
A minimum of first-level university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in Horticulture, Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Post-harvest technology or a related field.
Work Experience
A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in vegetable production, farm management and agronomy. Experience in farm produce international certification process (e.g. Global G.A.P.) is highly sought.
Languages
Fluency in Afan Oromo, Amharic and English is required.
