Background
The Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) is an African institution with the mission to promote peace and security in Ethiopia and Africa through education, research, and professional development. The Institute trains skilled professionals in conflict prevention, management and resolution as well as in peacebuilding, and promotes the values of a democratic and peaceful society. The institute would like, therefore, to recruit a Research Consultant to carry out a research project on Women in Peace-making and Peace-building in South Sudan and Rwanda.
Objective
The overall objective of this carry out field research and produce a knowledge product on a comparative study on Women in Peacemaking and Peace-building in South Sudan and Rwanda.
Tasks and Deliverables
Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Head of Research of IPSS, the consultant will perform the following tasks.
1. Develop and share an inception report outlining key deliverables, when and how they will be delivered.
2. Undertake a desk review of the previous study on women and peacebuilding in South Sudan and Rwanda
3. Undertake field study in South Sudan and Rwanda
5. Write a comprehensive research/knowledge on the above topic
6. Present research findings in a validation workshop
7. Incorporate comments, contributions, and corrections from the validation workshop in the research paper
7. Produce a final paper on Women in Peacemaking and Peace-building in South Sudan and Rwanda
Expected Outputs
The outputs of the Consultant will be:
1. Draft Develop and share an inception report outlining key deliverables, when and how they will be delivered.
2. Present preliminary/first findings to IPSS
3. Submit second draft of the research findings
4. Make a presentation of the research findings during the validation workshop
5. Submit final product to IPSS with comments and corrections from the validation workshop.
6. The Research report should be written in English

Duration
It is expected that the deliverables will be completed within 20 working days.
Qualifications
The Consultant should have the following educational qualifications; experience and competencies:
· At least a Master’s Degree in international relations, political science, economics or related field.
· A minimum of 10 years of proven experience of working in Africa on women, peace, and security.
· At least 5 years of practical experience in working on conflict analysis, peacebuilding, and peacemaking.
· The consultant should have a sound understanding of issues related to Violence against Women (VAW), Gender-based Violence (GBV), Conflict-Related Violence and mainstreaming of Gender of in peace-building in Africa.
· Experience in using international frameworks and regional mechanisms and frameworks on women peace and security.
· Mastery of and knowledge in using research tools and methods on conflicts.
Competencies:
A Track record on research writing in conflict, peace, and security.
· Capability to understand the field conflict and peace-building.
· Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and in a difficult environment.
Language Requirements:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Working knowledge of French is highly desirable.
