ROLE PURPOSE:
The Child Protection Specialist is responsible for the overall planning, coordination and management of child protection programme interventions within the project, ensuring that program activities are implemented to the highest quality standard. She/ he will be responsible in ensuring high-quality and timely technical support for implementation of program activities, including key research / assessment activities at inception phase coordinating with the thematic sectors and MEAL unit; ensure context specific and common implementation approaches across intervention areas for quality program implementation, ensuring program implementation according to nationally/internationally accepted and recommended standards; and work with technical and MEAL team for capturing and utilize high quality and well-articulated project evidence and research for learning, and advocacy
The Specialist is also responsible for contributing to strong Monitoring and Evaluations systems (M&E) to measure the impact of the programmes, for providing technical advice and support (in close co-ordination with the field based program staff) throughout the project cycle, and deliver supportive visits and technical capacity building support to staff in the field to ensure the child protection work is of high quality and achieves the programme objectives. The Specialist is also responsible for ensuring that lessons derived through implementation of projects are well articulated, documented and disseminated both internally and externally; and that engagement with policymakers and key stakeholders achieves advocacy objectives to realise greater change for children.
SCOPE OF ROLE:

Dimensions: Save the Children works in 9 regions in Ethiopia with a current staff complement of approximately 1,600 staff and current expenditure of approximately $90+ million each year.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
Child Protection Technical Advisory Support and Programme Quality
· Working closely with the MEAL unit, technical specialists, and the project consortium members leading the research work, ensure timely support of key research activities of the project at the inception phase. That include leading and timely delivery of key child protection related assessments/mapping and other activities to be implemented at the inception phase
· Technically lead and provide timely support to project staff, and identify and provide technical support to ensure quality implementation of the child protection project activities, as well as the integration of child protection across other thematic sectors activities within the project as appropriate. This requires joint operational planning with the field team, regular periodic supportive field visits to project sites to monitor progress of project implementation and understand what works well and the gaps, monitor quality, provide support as needed, and also capture lessons for use in new project development.
· Support the development and implementation of capacity building activities for the child protection staff of the project and other key protection stakeholders, based on needs assessment
· Provide guidance, advice and support to program managers and coordinators of the project in conducting assessments (both quantitative and qualitative), reviews and evaluations; as well as while conducting workshops or trainings as necessary.
· Provide mentoring and coaching on continual basis for child protection staff on the ground on essential skills and abilities to build the overall capacity of staff to eventually become capable in taking the project activities forward. This include the routine activities such as in case management systems building and process, case documentation, coordination with other agencies, engaging children and community mobilization, writing concise reports, collecting and

§ Advanced degree in psychology, sociology, social work or other child protection related field with a minimum of eight (8) years related work experience in the area of Child Protection.
§ Experience in working with government counterparts and other partners at various levels - federal to district. This includes technical support, capacity-building and coordination.
§ Excellent understanding of Child Protection issues in Ethiopia at both field and policy levels.
§ Practical understanding of the challenges and opportunities in realising children’s rights in Ethiopia, in relation to thematic area.
§ Experience in designing Child Protection strategies and proposals.
§ Strong data collection, analysis and report writing skills.
§ Strong analysis of Child Protection data and ability to summarise and communicate this to a range of audiences.
§ Proven advocacy and representation skills
