Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit organization founded in 1956 that works in more than 30 countries throughout the world. With the support of BPRM fund, DRC is aim to enhance access to justice to South Sudan refugees who recently in Okugo camp and the surrounding host community. In Ethiopia, legal aid exists mainly in urban areas where the majority of legal professionals choose to practice. The host communities – mostly the rural poor – as well as the refugees, themselves are more often unable to access justice through advice and representation.
In response to gaps and needs identified for legal aid services, DRC proposes to carry out activities that will enhance access to justice for refugees in Okugo camp. Specifically, DRC plans to conduct a legal need assessment to identify the exact nature of needs, gaps and available legal service providers in and surrounding the refugee camp. Based on the information collected, DRC will subsequently undertake legal awareness initiatives, will build the capacity of local justice actors and support traditional courts and customary mechanisms.
The purpose of the legal need assessment is to better understand the needs and tailor activities to meet the project objective which is enhancing access to justice to refugees and the surrounding host communities. The finding from this assessment will be used to adjust activities, indicators, and target accordingly
