The Department for International Development (DFID) is the British government’s department responsible for managing and delivering the UK aid programme globally in 35 countries. It also works through and supports several multilateral organisations such as the World Bank and United Nations.
DFID Ethiopia is looking for an experienced leader to oversee our large human development portfolio. With commitments of over £540 million, we aim to reach millions of Ethiopians and improve their access to education, health, water and sanitation services. If you are passionate about these issues and have the expertise to drive this agenda, there are few other places where you can have as much impact as we do in supporting Ethiopia during this period of rapid change.
Working for the Department For International Development
Background
The Human Capital Development Team in DFID Ethiopia leads UK Aid’s efforts in Ethiopia to strengthen the reach, quality and efficiency of basic service delivery systems in Ethiopia. Our current portfolio includes the following: Strengthening Climate Resilient System for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Services (WaSH) in Ethiopia (£95 million 2019-2024), General Education Quality Improvement Programme for Equity (GEQIP-E) (£110 million 2018-2022), Sustaining and Accelerating Primary Healthcare in Ethiopia (£250 million 2015-2020), Family Planning by Choice (£90 million 2017-2020). This portfolio is at the forefront of UK Aid’s systems - building efforts in collaboration with Ethiopian government ministries. Human Capital Development Team members work closely with other teams in DFID and across the British government (demographic transition, human capital, and prosperity). We also work closely with other partners, especially World Bank, UN agencies, and other bilateral donors in our policy engagement with the Government of Ethiopia (GoE). Our business planning will see major shifts in our human development programming. In order to support the demographic transition, achieve greater prosperity and help people adapt to climate change, we will continue to prioritise investment in primary and secondary education, particularly for girls. We will take a more focused approach, prioritising reproductive, maternal and new-born health to avoid preventable deaths and help build shock-responsiveness basic services to reduce internal displacement/humanitarian need and mitigate risks of conflict. Overall, we are likely to adopt a more cross-sectoral approach, targeting the most disadvantaged woredas and communities.
