Project Concern International (PCI) is a non-government and non-profit international organization dedicated to preventing diseases, improving community health and promoting sustainable development worldwide. PCI is currently looking for highly qualified Water Engender fulfils the following requirements. Water Engender will be responsible for the provision of effective leadership in the design, strategic planning, implementation and wise use of water resources as well as promotion of recommended water management.
JOB SUMMARY:
The purpose of the Water Engineer position is to reduce the hassle associated with access to water for both human and livestock in project areas. She/he conducts feasibility studies of community initiated shallow wells, spring development pond construction and surface dam projects. She/he also supervises all kinds of water construction man water resource management activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
Assesses proposed water projects to determine their feasibility and cost applications;
Carries out detail design, procedures and cost estimate and ensure the proper implementation of water structures (shallow wells, spring development, pond construction, cattle troughs, cistern, irrigation canals, surface an micro-dams, etc);
Maintains adequate inventory of water construction materials and ensures timely delivery to project sites.
Coaches field staff to improve their skills on water source management;
Trains WATSAN committees on hygiene /health education, system operation and maintenance;
Provides technical support and guidance in all phases of water development projects, i.e., appraisal, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation through regular field visits, training-based capacity building, and desk-based feedback;
Design strategies that motivate communities to actively participate in implementing water supply scheme, which also includes operation maintenance and management of water systems.
Establishes and strengthens water users committees;
Liaises with zonal water departments, NGOs and other stakeholders;
Works closely with Extension Agents, Supervisors, Field Officers and the community;
Encourages women to actively participate in any water related interventions;
Encourages and arranges ways for other stakeholders to participate on the project.
Supervises all water construction activities in the project area;
Prepares monthly, quarterly and interim reports to the supervisor on water project activities.
Keep up to date with developments in the sector, including best practice examples within the country and internationally, and ensures ongoing personal development and learning;
Participates in the documentation and dissemination of lessons learned.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirement
EDUCATION/TRAINING Required:
BSc in Water and/or Hydraulics Engineering or equivalent education and work experience. .
EXPERIENCE Required:
6 years job related experience for BSc degree
Desired:
Work experience in development oriented NGO.
TECHNICAL SKILLS Required:
Demonstrated technical ability, sound judgment and ability to work effectively with others at all levels;
Excellent communication and presentation skills in English;
Ability to speak local language;
Ability to effectively liaise with government, NGOs and other relevant stakeholders;
Firm belief in teamwork, gender equality and sustainable development;
Computer skill particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point.
Desired:
Auto CAD and other available Engineering software’s.
