The Accountant will provide accounting and administrative support for IIE Sub Saharan activities. He/she will ensure all financial transactions are in accordance with IIE and sponsor policies and procedures, US GAAP and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Areas of program responsibility include, but are not limited to: accounting, budgeting, financial analysis and reporting, payroll, and procurements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. IIE may add, change, or remove essential and other duties at any time. Accounting
Performs finance and accounting functions in accordance with US GAAP, IFRS, IIE financial policies and procedures, donor requirements, partner requirements, and all other applicable laws, rules and guidelines. Includes budgeting, payroll, tax issues, variance and accounts analysis.
Supports the preparation and maintenance of the general ledger/trial balance/financial statement in excel or financial software, as applicable.
Supports the preparation of a variety of financial records and reports including those related to the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory control and valuation, and fixed assets.
Supports the Preparation of Monthly/Quarterly/Midyear reports and Annual Financial Statements; provides financial reports to donors and stakeholders.
Ensures that all documents and processes for Account Receivables/Payables are fulfilled and accurately recorded based on set schedules. Includes invoicing, journals, reconciliations, reports, etc.
Supports the preparation and presentation of annual financial statements and other reports and documents for audits.
Supports banking and cash-related activity for the office.
Office Specific Duties:
Ensures the purchasing of materials, supplies and equipment are conducted in accordance with all applicable policies and procedures.
Reconcile division timesheets with external payroll reports.
Work with program staff to explain budget to actual variances and program results.
Ensure the adequate application of internal controls.
Oversee all month-end closing activities including general ledger closing, balance sheet reconciliations, bank statement review and monthly activity reports.
Support the annual and mid-year budgeting process.
Job Requirement
Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or like degree.
Between 2-5 years of hands on experience in accounting, including general ledger, cash management, financial planning, budgeting, and monitoring of grant compliance required.
Combination of commercial and not-for-profit financial administration experience highly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Ethiopian Tax, and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Familiarity with accounting software.
Experience with contracts, sponsor rules & regulations, and with current standards and guidelines.
Excellent critical thinking skills and judgment. Proven willingness to make timely and sound decisions.
Strong oral communication skills. Ability to communicate, advise, and resolve issues that are complex and sensitive in nature. Ability to communicate effectively with persons on all levels both inside and outside the company.
Strong written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to write in a clear, concise, well-organized manner.
Ability to work effectively in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressure. Self-motivated and able to follow through to end of assignments while meeting goals and deadlines.
Proven ability to effectively use Microsoft Office, spreadsheet, word processing, and position-specific software.
Fluency in Amharic and English, written and oral.
Accuracy, attention to detail.
Ability to read and interpret documents and ability to sit at a computer and operate a keyboard.
