Main objectives and responsibilities of the position
Provide medical care to beneficiaries according to adapted and updated medical knowledge, MSF protocols and values and universal hygiene standards to improve the beneficiaries’ health conditions.
MISSION AND PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
Apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnosis and prevention. Carry out inpatient consultations (intensive care unit, medical inpatient ward, TB ward, inpatient therapeutic feeding centre, Kala Azar treatment centre), prescribing the necessary treatment respecting MSF protocols.
Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, checking that they have understood.
Follow up the evolution of the hospitalized/IDP patients, through daily visits, consultations and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment following MSF protocols, deciding whether they can be discharged or transferred to other departments – in collaboration with other clinicians - and informing their family about the patient’s evolution.
In collaboration with the expat MD, organize the referral of patients to higher level for appropriate care and treatment.
Check and control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility and take care the quality, disinfection and sterilization of the medical material. Assure general compliance with standing hygiene standards.
Participate in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data, checking its validity.
Inform the expat MD about any problem or complication in the patient health status, medical error
Monitor the proper functioning of the department equipment or material.
In collaboration with the nutritional team, assure appropriate nutritional support and clinical care for malnourished patients, both children and adults.
Ensure ongoing training of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care.
Know and ensure all MSF medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control.
Work in collaboration with the whole medical team to ensure quality care of patients in the hospital.
Share the responsibilities of on-call duty with the other clinicians.
Share the responsibility of providing backup support to the on-call health officers with the other MDs.
In collaboration with the other clinicians, provide medical consultation to MSF staff:
Provide medical consultation and referral as needed (in cooperation with expat MD and MTL when referral or additional assistance required).
Ensure that staffs with accidental exposure to potentially infectious body fluids receive early and complete medical assessment, treatment and follow up.
Provide professional advice to the BoH Abdurafi Health Centre staff.
Train relevant staff of BOH health facilities on Kala Azar and other relevant topics.
In cooperation with the rest of the medical team:
Know the Emergency Preparedness plan (primarily AWD, meningitis and measles) and participate to its periodic revision.
Bring to the attention of the expat MD and MTL areas and health conditions of concern.
When necessary participate in assessments and emergency interventions.
Ensure professional confidentiality is respected.
May be delegated some tasks of the expat MD in case of leave.
Provide information for medical reporting.

Job Requirement
Requirements
Medical Doctor
Desirable Degree in Tropical Medicine
Needs to be registered according to the National requirements
2 year experience minimum as a Medical Doctor or in clinical work (can be within medical training). Desirable experience in infectious diseases (Kala Azar, HIV/AIDS/STDs, TB) and malnutrition.
Fluent in English and Amharic.
Essential computer literacy (word, excel)
Good inter-personal, cross-cultural communication skills.
Pleasant and polite attitude at all times; ability to reflect the principles and code of conduct of MSF.
Energetic, flexible, willing and able to work and live in hardship conditions in a remote and hot area of Ethiopia.
