Invitation for Consultancy Service for Translation Services
1. Introduction
Save the Children Ethiopia (SC-Eth) is a leading child well-being organization. Its vision is a nation in which every child’s survival, protection, development and participation is attained. Its mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way children are treated and to achieve immediate and lasting changes in their lives and that of their families. As part of our commitment to the wellbeing of children, SC-Eth has established Investment in Children as a breakthrough for Child Friendly National System and Structure Program. This breakthrough aspires to ensure that all children, especially vulnerable, benefit from greater public investment and better use of society’s resources in the realization of their wellbeing. Investment in Children aims at influencing State and Non-State actors to mobilize and allocate adequate resource to programs targeting children and to put in place transparency and accountability mechanisms to enhance citizens' engagement in budget process.
2. Background
Save the Children leads the full implementation of ENGINE – USAID’s flagship multi-sector nutrition project in 83 districts in the four main regions of Ethiopia. The project has a robust learning agenda that includes a mandate to widely disseminate lessons-learned and key findings to influence nutrition policy and practice to reduce stunting. Given the size, visibility and documentation requirements of this high profile project, Save the Children is seeking experienced and competent consultants/ professional translators to provide technically accurate translation services. SCI requires three individual consultants (one person per language) that would be able to translate a variety of materials/documents, such as manuals, brochures, scripts etc. The materials will be translated from English into Amharic, Tigrigna and Oromiffa languages within the specified period of time. Please note that in some cases, the materials may need to be translated from Amharic into Oromiffa and Tigrigna languages.
The professional translators should be based in Ethiopia and will translate materials/documents to support the development of nutrition related Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) materials.
The successful translators must provide samples of previous work, preferably translating materials and documents related to public health, demonstrating expertise in the areas cited below, and must be available to work within a short time frame.
3. Key Responsibilities
The professional translators will translate various documents/materials for ENGINE project. The translated materials/documents will be used to develop SBCC materials in multi-media formats, as part of a Community Campaign. The translators must be responsive to technical briefs and guidelines provided by ENGINE, and convey the intended message and emotions in a way that is appropriate, and easily understood by low-literate audiences in rural and semi-urban areas in the four regions.
4. Scope of work and deliverable
The Consultant/Translator will conduct the following tasks:
1. Manuals – Translate various manuals, facilitator’s manuals into Amharic, Oromiffa and Tigrigna languages.
2. Brochures/Leaflets – Translate steps and instructions that correspond to visuals in an appropriate manner.
3. Scripts/Other materials: - Translate materials that depict recommended nutrition and agriculture-nutrition behaviours and gender roles that promote good maternal and child nutrition outcomes and impact. Translation must maintain the context of the intended purpose and sense of the materials and messages.
The consultant should encompass the following competencies
1) Quotation: page/word rate/s (please specify rates by page and words separately)
2) Resume/CV: Including information describing previous relevant work experience
3) Experience: Must be proficient in using public health terms and references, preferably in nutrition and agriculture.
4) References: Names and contact information of a minimum of three previous clients
5) Samples: Only short-listed candidates will be requested to present their samples of previous work, during an interview. Samples should highlights your expertise and translation capabilities from the English language into the local languages you are proficient in and possess as many of the following specialty areas stated below.
