The Livestock and Irrigation Value-Chains for Ethiopian Smallholders (LIVES) project is an initiative designed by ILRI, IWMI (the International Water Management Institute) and their Ethiopian partners to enhance income and gender equitable wealth creation for smallholders and other value chain actors through increased and sustained market off-take of high-value livestock and irrigated crop commodities. It will design and implement interventions to improve market orientation of semi-commercial farmers for enhanced competitiveness, sustainability and equity in value chains in four regions of Ethiopia.
Research Officer I - Vacancy Number: A/008/2013
Main Duties:
• Under the guidance of the Research Coordinator, develops concept notes and detailed diagnostic value chains research methodologies for qualitative and quantitative value chain analysis pertaining to the market oriented priority commodities identified in the Pilot Learning Woredas (PLWs)
• Based on diagnostic studies, contributes to the identification of current best practices and new innovative value chain upgrading interventions for field testing, and in the development of concept notes and detailed action-oriented value chain research methodologies for priority commodities
• Contributes to the monitoring and evaluation and impact assessment of innovations for value chain upgrading
• Under the guidance of the Research Coordinator, develops research instruments for the diagnostic, action and impact evaluation value chain studies.
• Trains Research Assistants (RAs), supervisors and enumerators to implement data collection for the diagnostic surveys, action research, and impact assessment activities for the priority commodities
• Leads the implementation of data collection and data management (computerization, cleaning) and analysis for priority commodities
• Assists in the write up of research results and delivery of reports on time for the priority commodities
• Contributes to the organization of policy/value chains conferences, workshops and meetings
• Performs other assignment related to value chains as assigned by the supervisor and the project manager
• Assists in the coordination of LIVES research activities
• Contributes to journal articles and other publications
• Contributes towards communicating research to different types of audience
• Performs other duties/tasks as required and/or assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
• MSc in Agricultural Economics, Economics, Development Economics, or closely related fields
Experience:
• At least 5 years working for a research, educational institute or development organization in responsibilities relevant to the position. Refereed publication would be a plus.
Skills:
• Extensive data management experience
• Advance knowledge of statistical package especially STATA and SPSS
• Experience of application of STATA in real survey data set
• Good report writing skills
• Excellent knowledge of Excel application
• Experience in managing survey teams in the field
• Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Minimum
Base salary: Birr 17,106.00
Terms of appointment: Initial appointment is fixed term for two years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc.
The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
