Consultancy Service to adapt and translate Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) counselling materials for health workers in Somali region
Background
Save the Children leads the full implementation of ENGINE – USAID’s flagship multi-sector nutrition project in 16 districts in the Somali region of Ethiopia. The project has a robust learning agenda that includes a mandate to widely disseminate lessons-learned and key findings to influence nutrition policy and practice to reduce stunting.
Somali regional health bureau has established an SBCC working group composed of key partners including ENGINE to lead development and adaptation of MIYCN SBCC materials for health workers and HEWs in the region. The working group did material auditing and inventory and reached into a consensus which material to adapt for HEWs and HWs working at health centres. The working group identified USAID/ENGINE’s MIYCN counselling flip chart, which is being used in highlands, to be adapted for health workers.
Save the Children is seeking experienced and competent consultants/ professionals to provide technically accurate translation and adaptation of the MIYCN counselling material for health workers working at health centres in Somali Region. SCI requires individual consultant that would be able to translate and adapt Maternal, Infant and Young Child nutrition counselling materials for health workers working in health centres of Somali Region. The materials will be adapted and translated from English into Somali languages within the specified period of time. Please note that in some cases, the materials may need to be adapted and translated from Amharic into Somali language.
The SBCC working group established by Somali regional health bureau will oversee and approve the adaptation.
The professional consultant will be based in Addis Ababa and will translate and adapt the materials/documents to support the development of nutrition related Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) materials.
The successful consultant must provide samples of previous work, preferably translating & adapting materials and documents related to public health, demonstrating expertise in the areas cited below, and must be available to work within a short time frame.
Performance Period
The consultancy will be carried out with in short period of time in Addis Ababa and with one travel to Somali region.
Tasks;
The professional SBCC consultants will translate and adapt SBCC counselling material for health workers in Somali region.The translated and adapted materials/documents will be used in health facilities. The consultant must be responsive to technical briefs and guidelines provided by ENGINE, and convey the intended message and emotions in a way that is appropriate, and easily understood by low-literate audiences in pastoral and agro-pastoral areas of Somali region. Use of Somali cultural object.
- Translate and adapt counselling materials on maternal, infant and Young child (MIYCN) flip chart type that will be used by health workers in Somali region.
- Adapt and translate SBCC ideas and concepts in simple language that can be clearly understood by pastoral and agro-pastoral community in Somali region.
- Contextual Photos and messages to Somali context
- Insertion of photos properly with good design
- Apply the necessary graphic design that is needed for the adaptation
Scope of Work and Deliverables
- Submit first draft of the adapted MIYCN counselling material for review by ENGINE and SBCC working group in Somali region.
- Present the first draft to the working group
- Pre-test the materials in selected two facilities
- Submit one hard and soft copy of the final adapted MIYCN counselling materials
