Angelina Jolie was added as an executive producer to the Ethiopian film Difret.
Deadline make the announcement Wednesday, Jan. 15, just days before the film makes its world premiere on Saturday at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The film is supposed to be about a girl and a female lawyer who get involved with the Ethiopian tradition called “telefa,” also known as marriage by abduction.
The actress spoke of the film and how important is for her to support it.
“This film is a strong moment for art in Ethiopia,” the Unbroken director said in a statement. “It is inspiring to see such an important story so beautifully illustrated with such creative talent. It draws out the richness of Ethiopian culture and shows how important legal advances can be made while respecting local culture.”
“It is a story that gives hope for Ethiopia’s future, and for other countries where countless girls grow up without the protection of laws that shield them and their bodies,” she added, “and shows how the courage of brave individuals can awaken the conscience of a society.”
