Position Summary: To accept primary responsibility and accountability in delegating and assisting in the provision of quality comprehensive nursing care to the patients and to relieve the head nurse/nursing supervisor of the assigned unit as necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities: This job description is intended to provide an overview and is not all-inclusive. The job description may be changed as deemed appropriate by Girum Hospital.
1. Assists in planning nursing care (bed making, patient positioning, feeding, bed bath, mouth care, nail care, hair care, diaper changing, etc.);
v Develops nursing care plans that meet the individualized needs of the populations;
2. Prepares and administers medications and treatments as prescribed by physicians;
v Knows action and side effects of medication administered at designated times;
v Accurately observes, reports and records any complication;
v Be aware of the five right (right medication, right patient, right route, right dose ,right time);
3. Gives oral and written reports of pertinent information to oncoming staff;
v Communicates accurately in oral or written reports/information to each work related staffs;
v Handover must take place at the presence of all staffs;
4. Makes daily rounds, recording and reporting and progress on nursing note;
5. Adheres to policies and procedures of the Health Care Services;
v Knows and complies with policies and procedures which have been developed by Girum hospital (Standard of Girum hospital);
6. Responsible for safety and welfare of clients through proper implementation of nursing procedures;
v Routinely observes nursing care given by staff and makes suggestions accordingly;
7. Follows Universal Precautions and Infection Control guidelines;
v Implements accurately the precautions and guidelines;
8. Assists team members as needs arise. Duties may require lifting up to 50 pounds;
v Readily assists in all activities of the unit;
9. Consistently demonstrates professional attitudes and manner including confidentiality;
v Professional in appearance and relationships with staff and patients;
10. Demonstrates flexibility in recognizing and participating in 24 hour staffing if need occurs;
11. Maintains attendance and observes working hours, starting time, lunch period, breaks, sign-out time, etc;
12. Complies with work rules, regulations, and instructions, follows established systems and Procedures and completes assignments with minimal supervision;
13. Participates actively in the growth and development of nursing personnel through monthly staff meetings, daily reports, nursing rounds, and staff development meetings;
14. Collect sample, send to laboratory and collect the result on time;
15. Report to the head nurse or the person in charge about any damaged patient room equipment’s or working instruments;
16. Be knowledgeable regarding fire and disaster plans;

Ø Be always on time and physically available during all duty hours;
Ø Never leaves the nurse stations without physically handing over to the next nurse assigned to the floor i.e. nurses should be available at nurses station at all times;
Ø Sacrifices yourself to assure the safety of our patients and to make sure that the shifts are appropriately staffed and report any shift changes to immediate team leader and the head nurse office 24 hrs prior to your shift;
Ø Carry out orders as they are written on the order sheet and if verbal order by a physician write it on the order sheet and have the physician sign it within 24 hours BUT NEVER carry out an order that is not written;
Ø Be responsible for all hospital equipment that you are assigned and use;
Ø Communicate clearly with your patients about what you are about to do to them, similarly keep a smooth communication among your colleagues;
Ø Consult your head nurse or team leader in case you are unclear about anything;
Ø Never criticize one another in front of a patient nor try to pass a blame to another departments or colleagues in any situation as every one of us shares the same obligation to satisfy our patient need although you are encouraged to give constructive criticism to a colleague or subordinate promptly and appropriately (i.e. private room);
Ø Respect the hospital dress code (uniform), be well groomed and maintain good hygiene during duty hours;
Ø Document everything done for the patient during your shift and also facilitate that all appropriate forms are completed by the physician AND label every sample that goes to the lab;
Ø Maintain patient confidentiality;
Ø Avoid talking on your cell phone for personal matter while with a patient; if work related please excuse yourself and inform patient that the call was work related;
Ø Be willing to assist patients and colleagues promptly when they seek your help;
Ø Take ownership of our patients problems and concerns and be committed to finding solutions;
Ø Strive to continuously improve your skills and knowledge and attend all required training;
Ø Avoid chewing gum while on duty;
Ø Strive to provide a level of service that exceeds patients’ expectations whenever possible;
Ø Have a positive attitude and let’s all avoid being defensive;
Qualifications and Experience Requirements:
· Diploma or BSc in Clinical Nursing with renewed license
· Experience is not required
· COC Certified
· Computer application skill
· English and Amharic , additional languages are an asset
