This is an announcement for a Request for Proposals (RfP) from the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP) to conduct a qualitative study focused on sociocultural determinants of health behaviors of rural women in four regions of Ethiopia: Amhara, Oromia, SNNP and Tigray. This study is funded by a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) award to CCP.
The qualitative study will inform Communication for Health, a five-year project (2015-2020), which aims to increase knowledge and health practices of individuals and communities, while supporting systems to improve quality, capacity and coordination of social and behavioral change communication (SBCC) in Ethiopia. The project operates in Amhara, Oromia, Tigray and Southern Nations and Nationalities People State (SNNP) in partnership with John Snow, Inc. (JSI) and the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) of Ethiopia. The project also works across multiple health areas including reproductive maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH), malaria, tuberculosis (TB), water sanitation and hygiene (WASH), prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT), and nutrition. The multi-platform project includes strategic health interventions such as radio dramas, mHealth, campaign events, and print materials.
The qualitative study complements the project’s completed formative research including a literature review and baseline survey with 2770 women (ages 15-49 years) from Amhara, Oromia, SNNP and Tigray regions. The baseline survey identified priority health areas and audiences, and the qualitative survey will enhance the baseline findings to understand the influence of social norms, social groups, gender issues, and couple’s communication and their influence on health behaviors.
