DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Follow up with the IP selected for crop production to ensure refugee farmers are selected as per agreed criteria
Work with the IP to ensure construction of secondary and tertiary canals, land preparations and farm demarcations are undertaken as part of preparations for planting, targeting Hilaweyn, Buramino and Melkadida irrigation schemes.
Support Crop production IP in establishing active farmer field schools, as a first step towards establishing farm cooperatives, which are registered with the Woreda Cooperative Bureau in all irrigation schemes.
Support the Crop Production IP to set-up water users committees, farmers associations and work to strengthen their organisational capacity.
Support the farmers’ associations to develop farming systems and commodity groups with an orientation towards market-based production
Support Livestock IP in the further development of the community-based animal health service in the refugee camps and the identification of viable business opportunities in the livestock value chain
Oversee the implementation of the small-pumps river bank irrigation pilot, including possible opportunities for expansion.
Together with the Irrigation Engineer follow-up on proposed irrigation infrastructure expansion targets for 2016, bringing to the attention of the Senior Programme Officer, any issues and challenges for timely action.
Work with the relevant parties including the Farmer’s Union in Dollo Ado on setting up a farmers’ management structure.
Liaise with Government officials at Regional, Woreda and Kebele levels and provide technical oversight to implementing partners focusing on livelihoods interventions in the agriculture, livestock and Natural Resources Management (NRM) sectors and ensure timely deliverable of targets and outputs.
Job Requirement
Essential Minimum Qualifications and Experience
B.Sc. degree in Agriculture
Masters in Agriculture will an added advantage
Ability to work in stressful situations and in hardship locations;
5 years or more relevant experience in the Agricultural sector.
Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, good report drafting ability.
Desirable Qualifications & Competencies
Proven coordination, planning and organizing skills
Excellent computer skills
Strong experience in data analysis
Ability to apply technical knowledge in day to day work
