SPANA’S Mission
Established in 1923, our mission is to improve the welfare of working animals in the world’s poorest communities. We do this through treatment, training and teaching. We TREAT by providing free veterinary care when animals suffer or when emergencies strike. We TRAIN by building expertise among vets and promoting humane care by animal owners. We TEACH children to develop positive believes, respect and compassion towards animals.
Background and purpose of the role
SPANA registered and started operations in Ethiopia in 2003 and today works through both direct implementation and partnership to bring about a sustainable improvement in the welfare of working animals. Our approach enables owners to access quality health services through vet clinics, it also enables the improvement of animal welfare through the adoption of better management and husbandry practices by communities through community training and education programmes.
The Country Director is responsible for providing in-country leadership and overall responsibility for managing the SPANA’s programme in Ethiopia, which has as its core aim an improvement in the welfare of working animals in Ethiopia.
The Country Director will implement SPANA policy on establishing objective frameworks for existing programmes, identifying new projects for expansion in accordance with the frameworks (core, partnerships, outreach and emergency) and reviewing all existing programmes prioritising by need and lack of existing service provision including the activities of other agencies.

The Country Director will represent SPANA to the Ethiopian Federal Government, and in particular to the Ministry of Agriculture and the newly formed Livestock and Fisheries Ministry, regional governments, donors, and national and international NGOs.
